10 things you must know about SBI IFSC codes

- Every code is of 11 characters (alphabets and numbers).
- 5th character of code is always 0 (zero).
- Every code starts with "SBIN0" (SBIN is the bank code of State Bank of India).
- There are about 22,000 codes of the bank (The exact number keeps on changing as the bank opens new branches or merge existing ones). You can get the number of SBI branches by looking at analyst presentations.
- The last five characters of code represent the branch code. For example, "SBIN0000001" is the IFSC of SBI Kolkata Main branch, its branch code is "00001".
- "SBIN00CARDS" IFSC code can be used to make payment of an SBI credit card. Your 16 digit card number is used as an account number.
- Only 20 codes have alphabets in their last six characters (Remember this number can change at any time). Put in another way, for all other last six are digits. List of codes containing alphabets:

- If an IFSC code of an SBI branch starts with "SBIN005", it was earlier a branch of State Bank of Patiala (e-SBP). Similarly, "SBIN007" for State Bank of Travancore (e-SBT), "SBIN002" for State Bank of Hyderabad (e-SBH), and "SBIN003" for State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur (e-SBBJ). There can be exceptions to this.
- After the merger of associate banks with SBI, associate bank branches got new IFSC Codes.
